Operating Systems

WinPSP has been tested on Windows 98 (Second Edition) and Windows 2000 (Service Pack 1). It should also work on Windows XP, Windows ME, and Windows NT 4.0, but it will not work on Windows 95 or Windows 3.x.

Windows 98 will not work with the boot loader introduced in WinPSP 2.0. Windows 98 can only be used with the PICSTART Plus. There appears to be a long-standing bug in Windows 98's serial driver that renders it incapable of sufficiently reliable communication without hardware flow control enabled. This bug might also exist in Windows ME, although we do not have any Windows ME configurations to test with. If you plan to use the boot loader, we suggest using Windows 2000 or XP.

Hardware

WinPSP 2.0 has been tested on PICSTART Plus firmware version 3.00.00. You must use at least that version with WinPSP 2.0.
If your PICSTART Plus firmware is version 2.x.x, and you're unable to upgrade it to at least 3.00.00, you will have to use an earlier version of WinPSP.

Microchip made several changes to the communication protocol, probably to support devices with program memory sizes over 64K.
